The World is changed by Us In my early childhood, I had always been a fan of the great actor, Robin Williams, for the movies he did that amaze us and make us laugh. Sadly, he past away on August 11th, 2014, the day before celebrating my 17th birthday. However, I remember some influence that he brought on the screen that inspired me in a riveting way. One of the most influential cult films that has been a favorite for many people, including mine, is "Dead Poet's Society." One quote that was mentioned by Robin Williams' character, 'John Keating,' in the film, was a simple phrase that had a marvelous influence on me. He said, "No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." That tremendous phrase is something that has impacted me personally in my life and should be reflected upon by those who take advantage to influence the world emphatically. The word change means to adapt or become entirely different. An example that has helped personally to understand this phrase, is sharing the gospel with everyone. As a ex-missionary, I know that the gospel can indeed change the world. There are also other ways. We learn that this world today, many people try to influence us to adapt something good or merely not good. "Words and ideas," are used in many different ways. Poetry, the media, books, and politics. Some entertainment, such as music, movies, and television, are also created to have controversial or positive influence on others. For example, I myself like music from John Mayer. However, in his most popular hit,"Waiting on the World Change," it has a clear understatement that suggests the world should change itself rather than our influence should change the world. I'm not trying to diminish the thoughts and opinions of others, but to give a clear understanding that we are ourselves have the privilege to refine this world and transform it in the best possible way with our own words and ideas. I myself need to improve and all of us have a way to improve. Something that I will always remember is that there aren't specific people that can refine the world, all of us can.

The private prison system involves the incarceration of prisoners by a third party that is contracted by a government agency. While private prisons save the government and taxpayers money, they provide a dis advantage to society at large as well as those incarcerated and also open the door for moral dilemmas in the judicial system. Currentl y, private prisons are becoming a more popular choice for detaining prisoners. In 2016 it was reported that private prisons held nearly three-quarters of federal immigration detainees. (ACLU,2016) However the conditions that these prisoners live in is sub par when compared to sta te run prisons. Private prisons higher fewer guard because the pay is less attractive. This heightens the levels of violence and riot ing as there are less people to help control it. Not only is prisoner safety affected: so is their health. A class action suit on behalf of prisoners at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Utah stated that as a direct result of the atrocious food , a majority of the inmates looked emaciated and had lost anywhere from 10- 60 pounds on average. Furthermore , when companies profit from the incarceration of men and women, the only means of increasing the profit is increasing the number of persons being sent to jail. This leads to the laws being broken by members of the judicial system such as prosecutors and jurors to ensure that this prisons profit. This has been se en time and time again. In February 2011 , a Penn sylvania Judge Mark Ciavarella was convicted of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy in connection with payments received from a private prison ( aclu,2016 ) . He was sending people to for p rofit prisons because it allowed him to profit. This is just an example of what can happen when people profit from locking persons away. Studies show that the United States has the most persons in lockup in the world. Having a prison system which benefits from high numbers of people being incarcerated has led to the overcrowding seen in jails today. There are studies which contradict the pejorative view that has been presented. In the New York Times, a 2016 article states that private prisoners are better able to keep prisoners safe because they are better able to find and seiz e contraband than public counterparts. Furthermore, their investigation showed that inmates in private prisons are less likely to use drugs, be involved in misconduct or die. The cost of taking care of these inmates is over $3,000 less per inmate than public prisons.

Design Differences in Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research :: sociology,
The design differences in qualitative research in comparison to quantitative research plainly seen are these: qualitative research involves words, pictures, or objects; quantitative involves data in the form of numbers and statistics. The researcher uses in-depth interviews in qualitative research to find out how the subjects view their world. In quantitative research the researcher uses precise measurement to predict hypotheses. In qualitative research the researcher changes the environment of the subject and uses these in-depth questionnaires to find differing attitudes about the world we live in. Quantitative can be personal, such as in periodic visits with the researchers to analysis symptoms and record data. Qualitative and quantitative can overlap in the in-dept interview process in quantitative research to record data and test subjects for symptoms. The two designs can overlap but there are finally differences such as numerical data collection and statistics that will always b e at odds. I will always disagree with the statement that quantitative research is impersonal since experience is the best knowledge to know that is not true even though on the surface quantitative research seems impersonal because raw data is obtained. It first begins with the interview in both methods. Then it progresses and branches off into two very different methods. The human quality is there throughout the study in quantitative research though you are required to impute data into the system daily. When you meet with the researchers periodically you are reminded of the human quality. Researchers in all research care about their subjects, if even in professional way. In ending, these are the definitive differences between the two methods that are most recognized: The quantitative method first involves a theory and hypothesis clearly stated in the beginning, the qualitative methods do not formulate a hypothesis until the end of the study. Secondly, the quantitative method involves manipulation and control. An example of manipulation is the drug the control is the placebo. The drug is the instrument, you are being experimented on, the data you give is analyzed and a theory or hypothesis is reasoned. Then the data is reduced to statistics that are abstract and understandable by statististitians. Secondly in comparison, qualitative research ends with the hypothesis, involves emergence and portrayal of the world through the subjects eyes, the researcher changes the subjects environment so the he/she can observe how the subject reacts in certain ways, the researcher measures emotional responses and is directly involved in the research as being a confederate, or an impartial observer.

Evolving Through Ignorance Essay
Socrates Cafe, a book written by Christopher Phillips that unfolds his story on facilitating lots of free discussion forum in a lot of different places. But what is Socrates Cafe itself? It is a place; a place for people who wonder, a place for people with different backgrounds to immerse their own self into questions and ideas and dogmas through Socratic Method. Phillips made an effort to revive the condition of what Socrates more than two millennia ago did in Athens. He went through a lot of hard time in order to establish this and to start this out of nothing, which includes abandoning his occupation as a journalist. In this essay I would like to peel in a deep more into one section of the book in which Philips cited Richard Tarnas belief. According to Richard Tarnas, Socrates believed that ââ¬Å"the discovery of ignorance was just the beginning of the philosophical taskâ⬠, not the end (201) [1]. People believe that being ignorant is a bad thing, as a human being we have to be conscious of everything we do and take responsibilities of our actions. How can we know that we are being ignorant? To discover about our own ignorance to certain things is a stepping-stone for us to improve ourselves, thatââ¬â¢s what Socrates believed and I do agree with him. After we are conscious about our own ignorance, we can start to inquire our own self and dig deeper to overcome our assumption about what it takes to be a human being ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s what philosophical task is about for me. Over the last 10 decades, the Earth average surface temperature has rose by 0. 8 à ± 0. 2 ? C, especially over the last 5 decades, the rise had been significant [2]. This kind of improvement tends to create serious problem, globally, not only in particular place. What caused this global warming to happen? The answer is the inhabitants itself, humans had been more and more ignorant about what crisis they face, we know about the fact of this but we choose to ignore it. We donââ¬â¢t accept the fact that we are being ignorant and we believe that we are not. The dominant mechanism of this issue is anthropogenic and mostly the result of human activities. Human increases the atmospheric concentrations of human gases through their industrial wastes. More than hat, we made a global change to the land surface such as deforestation, in order to make more fields for construction. We are being ignorant about whatââ¬â¢s happening and continue to fulfill our needs, we are being greedy. So, what can we do in order to overcome this problem? The answer is to discover what we are being ignorant at, just as what Socrates believe as the start of philosophical t ask. By accepting the fact that we are so ignorant about our current condition we can start to make a move to overcome this condition that potentially will be the root of serious problem and make our way towards a better future. For me, the biggest obstacle for this is to overcome our tendency to pursue our goal without thinking about the risks, we tend to think laconically, not being able to imagine about the cause of our action and the impact to our surroundings. We were blinded by the prospect of our goals and its profit and when the problem rises we hide our hands, itââ¬â¢s an ill wind for me to see such an occasion. We ensconce under our own thought that we are doing the right thing whereas in fact we arenââ¬â¢t. In one way, we tried to establish something that contributes to the society but we are also down falling it. It will be better if we can do something while we are not damaging our environment before itââ¬â¢s too late. Thereââ¬â¢s no time like the present. I think itââ¬â¢s even worse when people arenââ¬â¢t ignorant of certain things and yet still act with ignorance,â⬠John finally offers, ââ¬Å"For instance, when a racist continues to be a racist, yet is aware of the reasons why heââ¬â¢s a racist ââ¬â perhaps heââ¬â¢s even aware that his racism is illogical because he knows damn well that all of us are 99. 9 percent genetically identical ââ¬â then thatââ¬â¢s even more scary than when people are racist out of sheer ignorance. (204) [3] I have a many more examples about the impact of feigning ignorance and how scary it is. In my home country, there are still a lot of people living in urban slums. The government notices about this but they are not taking any action, because they think they wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to fix this because itââ¬â¢s too severe and widely spread. In my city, over one-fourth of the total citizen live in slums [4] and thatââ¬â¢s not a number we can ignore. We really canââ¬â¢t ignore this kind of thing and the government really needs to take actions, instead of being ignorant. Through philosophical inquiry they can get the answers to this problem, and thatââ¬â¢s why they need to discover and admit their ignorance before they can start the long journey to fix this. One of the biggest factor and something that has never been able to be resolved from time to time is the corruption in Indonesia. The percentage of corruption in the government reach a peak number of 91% [5] and thatââ¬â¢s way too high compared to another countries. I canââ¬â¢t believe that we are still holding on with the 10% leftover from whatââ¬â¢s not corrupted to manage the country. Just imagine if the government can eradicate the corruption culture, we would have 10 times of what we have now for our country formation and it would be amazing because we can solve a lot of problems from that. Itââ¬â¢s a bigger ignorance if we close our eyes to this. And yes, the government had already established a corruption eradication commission, but they arenââ¬â¢t fruitful and the problem is still there. I think thereââ¬â¢s corruption in the commission itself because they are not doing their job well and that makes it a corruption inside a corruption eradication commission, thatââ¬â¢s way too ridiculous for me and itââ¬â¢s so hard to accept it. Weââ¬â¢ll need a leader that can lead the country to the right path in his honesty and his desire to remove corruption in our country, the one that can reveal how chronic the level of ignorance in the government is. In fact, before I even have a chance to respond, a woman whose booming voice belies her diminutive stature, says ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think we have a right to be ignorant. I think we have a responsibility to constantly educate ourselves, to make ourselves less ignorant. (201) [6] Quoting it from Socrates Cafe, I wouldnââ¬â¢t agree with her statement about we are not having the right to be ignorant since we actually do. As a human, we have freedom to do whatever we want to do ââ¬â itââ¬â¢s our own life. What matters is the consequences of our actions, if you choose not to constantly educate yourselves and responsibly develop your talents then you have to shoulder the risks by yourself. You will be getting more and more outdated and you wonââ¬â¢t be able to compete with those people who responsibly develop their talents. Socrates was fully aware of his own self ââ¬â thereââ¬â¢s one of his paradox that strikes me, ââ¬Å"I only know that I know nothingâ⬠. He never claimed that heââ¬â¢s wise, he knew that there will always be spaces to improve as long as you breathe. Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignoranceâ⬠, according to Will Durant Quoted from his Book: The Great Gadflyâ⬠, Time magazine, 8 October 1965 (review of The Age of Voltaire by Will and Ariel Durant). Thereââ¬â¢s no end to our education, we will progressively and continually discover new things over time if we are doing it in a right way. Through ignorance we evolve ââ¬â we thrive and mature through ignorance. The more we realize that we are lacking in lots of aspects, the more we will be able to see the potential in us. Look. And think. Then look some more. And think some more. Donââ¬â¢t ever stop looking, or thinkingâ⬠(206) [7]. We have to see the world in many perspectives, and be conceptual ââ¬â thereââ¬â¢s no way that we can learn about something in one go. Doing so will mislead us to misconception and prevent us to think creatively, our creativity will be restricted by our own belief ââ¬â instead, we have to dive deep into it and broaden our knowledge about it by doing some research so that we can analyze and understand more complicated and abstract ideas. That is one of the reason on why we have to be conscious about our own ignorance and start our own Socratic Inquiry, to be a better person ââ¬â and to get a better understanding about what it takes to be an entity that will never stop to learn and to grow exponentially. Discover your own ignorance and make it a foundation on building your blocks of life ââ¬â always think about what changes can you bring to your own life and what do you have to do in order to achieve that ââ¬â then start your progress enthusiastically so that when death draws near you will know that you are living your life to the fullest and have no regret.

This therefore means that there is more to the emphasis on risk, this is because even in normal pregnancies, women are expected to go ahead with child bearing even when the risks are obvious. Furthermore, child bearing has always been taken as something women owed to men and the society regardless of their feelings and when they had little say about it, there were no cases of risk therefore why would the risk be seen now when women have choices? attention should therefore not be drawn to surrogacy as a less risk to the non-traditional reproduction approach. The wrong thing with this transfer is that it involves exploitation of women by men and also exploitation of the rich by the poor people. Another question raises of whether there is something wrong with separation of reproduction and sex. From the history, the separation which is inform of contraception is beneficial to women and society although it is termed as immoral by others. However, not all separations are morally wrong, contraception is permitted because it promotes autonomy, spares women health, manages population and strengthens family life but separation of sex and reproduction exploits women, increases population and weakens family life. This is true because in the case of population problem, people should think of all population policies but not to exploit infertile problems, further, if the major justification for contraception is family strengthening, then contracted pregnancies could do the same and whether or not children saves failing marriages, then surrogacy will prevent a man with a woman incapable of providing children from leaving. Surrogacy reduces women autonomy although some other cases show that it enhances it, the practice also burdens some class of women and the new choices are expected to nourish womens lives so long as they have control of their bodies. What is wrong here however is that contracted pregnancy is seen as prostitution which is sex without reproduction and surrogacy is reproduction without sex, the feature which the two share is that it is a lazy persons way of exploiting own natural resources. However, Laura views this as a naive view of what it entails to be a prostitute and the efforts involved in pregnancy (Khuse Peter,204). Overall asserts that it cannot and is not ones career choice and neither is it a real alternative, she says that it is implausible that parents would want it for their daughters or for people to start training on surrogate mothers, worse still, for schools to invite surrogate mothers to address its advantages, however for Laura, this is a blatant argument and such condemnations should have general condemnation of effortless ways of life which is involved in utilizing distinctive characteristics. This is because people always exploit their resources whenever they work; professors use their minds while ditchdiggers use their bodies, therefore Overall seems only to object some types of work such as contracted pregnancy which is no more than real job options for women. Her arguments that such a deal is not a real job is clearly not based on any social arrangements which enable earning a living but its based on moral judgment which seem wrong because they constitute bodily and personal alienation. Overalls arguments are seen as weak as she says that women working as surrogates are deprived expression of individuality, that they are interchangeable and have no choice of the sperm they are supposed to harbor, (Khuse Peter, 204).

How do you stack up against other test takers in your state? Finally, what are some interesting state facts- for example, which state has the highest SAT score? The lowest SAT score? The highest rate of participation? It's the battle of the states, SAT edition. Find out your state's average SAT scores and other fun facts in this article! What Is the National Average SAT Score? Before we get into the SAT averages by state, let's quickly go over the SAT scoring system as well as what the overall average SAT score in the US currently is. As you probably know, the SAT is made up of three sections: Reading, Writing and Language (also just called Writing), and Math. The Math section is scored on a scale of 200-800, while the Reading and Writing sections are combined to give you a final Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score on a scale of 200-800. By combining these two sections, we get atotal SAT score rangeof400-1600, with 1600 being a perfect score. Now that we've got this down, let's take a look the national average SAT score. In 2018, the College Board reported the following average SAT scores: Total: 1068 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW): 536 Math: 531 As you can see, the average scores for EBRW and Math are quite close. These then add up to get a total SAT average score that's around the halfway point of the total score range (400-1600). But what are the average SAT scores by state? Keep reading to learn some interesting trends and to see the notable top spots held by different states! State SAT Awards We'll start with the states that have won our "State SAT Awards." The categories for these are as follows: Highest SAT Score Highest SAT Score With Over 20% Participation Team Players (100% Participation) Lowest SAT Score Most Variation Between SAT Sections All data below comes from the College Board's 2018 SAT state reports. Highest Score: Minnesota (SAT Score: 1298) Minnesota takes the cake for highest average SAT score with 1298. This is 230 points higher than the national average! But wait- Minnesota also has lower test participation than 78% of the US at 4%. In other words, just 2,464 seniors took the test in 2018. Because more students in Minnesota take the ACT than they do the SAT, Minnesota's high average SAT score likely means that only the most prepared, ambitious high schoolers take the SAT. These students tend to score higher, effectively raising the state's average. But what if we look instead at states with a significant participation rate- that is, a state in which more than 20% of students take the SAT? The winner for that SAT award is ... Highest Score With Over 20% Participation: Arizona (SAT Score: 49, with 29% Participation) Great achievement here! With more than 20,000 students in the class of 2018 taking the SAT here, Arizona is truly outperforming the national average. Team Players (100% Participation): Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, and Michigan In Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, and Michigan, every student took the SAT. This usually means that thesestates require all high school students to take the SATas part of normal high school testing. In addition, four other states- Illinois, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island- as well as the District of Columbiaoffered the SAT statewide during the 2017-18 school year. But because the testwasn't mandatory for all students in these states for the entire school year, participation rates here are below 100%. The highest participation rate for non-mandatory testing goes to Florida, at 97%. Lowest Score: District of Columbia (SAT Score: 977) Unfortunately, the District of Columbia underperforms the national average by more than 90 points. Also ranking at the bottom are other states with statewide SAT testing (Delaware and Idaho) as well as West Virginia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. From the data, it's reasonable to conclude that statewide testing causes lower scores because it includes all seniors andnot just those planning to apply to college. The lowest SAT score for a non-mandatory state is 1014 in Florida. While Florida is only in the top 18% of the country as far as participation goes (97% participation rate), it's important to point out that this is still a huge number of students, as the population of Florida is so large. In 2018, 147,058 students took the SAT in Florida. This number is much higher than the number of test takers in other states with comparable SAT participation rates, such as Rhode Island (97% participation rate, 10,161 students) and New Hampshire (96% participation rate, 14,834 students). So even though only 97% of students took the SAT in Florida, there's still plenty of room for variation within these nearly 150,000 students' scores. Most Variation Between Sections: Florida (520 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 497 Math) With a participation rate of 97%, Florida also has the greatest difference between SAT section scores of all states. The libertarian response to Rawlsââ¬â¢ theory of justice as offered by the American political philosopher Robert Nozick in his book Anarchy, State, and Utopia should be realised as belonging to the social contract tradition in political philosophy. ... In a reflective exploration of Nozickââ¬â¢s response to Rawlsââ¬â¢s theory of justice, it becomes lucid that the contrasting books of John Rawlsââ¬â¢ A Theory of Justice and Robert Nozickââ¬â¢s Anarchy, State, and Utopia have dominated the debate in analytical political philosophy for the last three decades. In his 1971 book, Rawls presented the case for a form of liberal egalitarianism which was challenged by Nozickââ¬â¢s arguments in favour of libertarianism, including the free market, absolute property rights, and the ââ¬Ëminimal stateââ¬â¢, presented in his book in 1974. Ever since the publishing of these contrasting books, a vast quantity of critical literature has been written on their political philosophy and Nozick has gained the approbation of the contemporary political philosophers as his arguments are strikingly close to the political spirit of the current age. ââ¬Å"Nozickââ¬â¢s project is to defend the libertarian minimal state ââ¬â akin to t he ââ¬Ënight-watchmanââ¬â¢ state of classical liberalism ââ¬â which exists purely to safeguard the personal and property rights of individuals. The enterprise falls into three stage.â⬠(Wolff 1991, P. 4). First of all, Nozick makes the argument, against the Anarchist, that a state as broad as a minimal state can be justified. Secondly, he makes his arguments against the defender of the extensive state by claiming that the minimal state is the most extensive form of legitimate state. Thirdly, he maintains that the minimal state is ââ¬Ëinspiringââ¬â¢ as well as right, and there is no cause of regret. (Wolff 1991, P. 4). When you have competition, you generally have cheaper products, better wages, better quality, and less externality and abuse of public goods. This means that, by definition, an oligopolistic market structure is a market failure Why is competition good? Adam Smith, in his seminal Wealth of Nations, argued that markets reach a so-called ââ¬Å"harmony of interestsâ⬠only when they are fully competitive (Francis). A ââ¬Å"harmony of interestâ⬠is a situation where an individuals self-interest and the pursuit thereof also benefits society. It is also called pareto optimal. But competition has a strict definition and so is never perfectly achieved. The market must be composed of a great many buyers and sellers, almost as many as there are dollars flowing through the market, with only infinitesimal islands interrupting the free market sea. These buyers and sellers must produce and consume, respectively, only a tiny portion of the goods available. This way, no one buyer or seller can control supply and demand. Further, all the goods flowing through the market must be functionally the same. And there has to be no or extremely low barriers to exit and entry on the part of both consumers and producers. An oligopolistic market is one where a collection of large firms own a lot of the market of the market (Lecture Slides 7-9).
